Frequently Asked Questions
How do the baths work? Do we need to bring bathing suits?
We are not a spa, but we are lucky to have authentic Japanese baths. The water is natural spring water that we heat to 104 degrees. Bathing suits are not permitted, as they carry soap into the baths. As in Japan, guests wash outside the bath first and then immerse. Children who are not toilet trained are not permitted in the baths. We have two separate baths, and they are reserved at a time that you request when you check in. Most of the time, the baths are reserved per couple or per family. However, if we have a group booking the retreat, they may request women on one side, and men on the other. Morning baths are offered during times of high occupancy.
Do you offer dinner? Can we bring dinner?
As we are a "bed & breakfast", dinner service is not available on most evenings. Dinner service is available on 2 days a week. Please refer to our availability calendar for the days offered. A simple set menu is $25 per Guest plus taxes, and alcoholic beverages are not provided.
Alternately, the closest eateries are located in Strasburg or Wardensville and it is only a 20 minute drive. Get a printable list here.
If food is brought, we have a mini fridge and a microwave available for guests’ use. However, the kitchen is off limits to guests per the Virginia Department of Health.
What do people do at Pembroke Springs?
Most guests come to our retreat to relax and enjoy the baths. Masseuses and reflexologists are available by appointment. If guests are interested in tennis, we ask that they bring rackets and tennis shoes. If guests are interested in fishing, a fishing pole needs to be added to the list. Hiking is a must, and be sure to bring the appropriate shoes. We do not have TV’s or telephones within the guest rooms, but we do have TV’s in the common areas. We also have a DVD player available for guests.
Can I connect to the internet?
Our satellite is able to provide internet access if guests have the capability on their lap top, and depending on weather and location in the guest house.
What is a Japanese breakfast? What if we are vegetarians?
Our Japanese breakfast typically consists of a grilled fish, rice, seaweed, vegetables, egg (prepared to your request) miso soup, and fruit. Meat is not served with a Japanese breakfast, so most vegetarians are fine. However, if you are a vegan, please let us know and an alternate breakfast will be prepared. We are also happy to offer an American breakfast if you prefer.
Can we check in early? Can we stay late?
We advise checking in before dark as the country roads are not well lit and we want you to be welcomed by the beautiful scenery surrounding us. We can offer an early check in if we are not booked the night before. If you are interested in an early check-in, please give us a call on the morning of your arrival so that we can give you an update on the status. Similarly, checking out later than 11:00 would be subject to arrivals we have the day of your departure.
